Dr. Huang teaches and practices classic formulas from the Shang Han Lun tradition in Nan Jing, China. A group of us studied with Dr. Huang in Nan Jing in October of 2007. We asked that he return to offer more of his profound perspective on Chinese herbal medicine. This seminar is designed to give the previous participants a deeper understanding of Dr. Huang's teachings as well as to give new students a clinically relevant study of Dr. Huang's classic formula and body type approach.
Dr. Huang relies almost solely on classic formulas from the Shang Han Lun in his own busy practice in Nan Jing. His approach to diagnosis is based on body types. There are 10 main body types based on the leading herbs in the classic formulas. For example there are Gui Zhi, Chai Hu, Ban Xia, Fu Zi....etc. body types. The concept of body type extends to personality as well. For more information about Dr. Huang's body type approach you can read several articles about it in The Lantern including this article on Wen Jing Tang by Sharon Weizenbaum, and this Interview with Michael Max In addition you can read more at Classic Formulas with Michael Max
In this course Dr. Huang will teach us his way of understanding individual herbs and herbal combinations from a classic formula and body type perspective. This will greatly aid practitioners in understanding the dynamics of the classic formulas as well as the basis for modifications. Dr. Huang's teachings are very straightforward, immediately applicable in the clinic and richly tied to the ancient traditions.
Over the course of 9 days, Dr. Huang will teach 8 days in total (with two half days). There will be 5 days in which the afternoon will consist of seeing patients with Dr. Huang. This will greatly enhance our understanding of his way of diagnosing and prescribing.
